What, then, can we learn about leadership from these “secrets”? First, our analysis reveals that these seven leadership “secrets” appear to be reductionist, trivial, or simplistic recipes for successful leadership.
In addition, it should be noted that a large number of books discussed leadership as a process of successfully managing and adapting to change. The themes of (1) continuous learning, (2) handling failure or struggle, (3) personal motivation, and (4) decision-making were commonly derived from the context of what a leader needs to do or possess in the face of contextual change.
Third, when examining the timeline of most discussed leadership “secrets,” the results indicate that the prevalence of some “secrets” varies in a cyclical pattern whereby these topics gain prominence in one period and then disappear in the next period, only to reemerge in a later era. For instance, we found that team, group, and organizational strategy was prevalent in the 1990–1994 period, but disappeared in 1995–1999, only to reappear in the 2000–2004 and 2015–2016 periods.
