[…] Abduction as a form of scientific inference distinguished by pragmatist philosopher Charles Sander Peirce has gained considerable traction as a means for revisiting the relationship between theory and data in qualitative inquiry. Abduction starts with the acknowledgement of an anomaly or a surprise that challenges the expectations of the researcher and prompts them to ask for an explanation. Expectations are shaped by preconceptions, worldviews and beliefs rooted in researchers’ experiences and exposure to theories.
